"For me, drinking and video games go hand in hand on Friday and Saturday night. We all do it. We start out in our younger years as small kids drinking juice boxes before the next level of Sonic. We graduated up to soda as we got older before taking on that next passenger in Crazy Taxi. So as an "adult" (I use that term loosely when referring to myself) we carry the torch into alcoholic beverages, mixing them in with our video game time. It can be fun times, or it can totally fuck up your game save forever. Here are a few tips with New Year's coming up to help you stay up late and get your game on."

Is Natal Being Over Hyped?
Koku Gamer writes: "Ever since Project Natal was first introduced at E3 2009, many industry watchers started to anticipate the peripheral. Big networks likes NBC and Fox even showed the device off. The Jimmy Fallon show had Kudo from Microsoft even demonstrate the hardware working with Burnout Paradise; it looked very solid and ready to be used for a wide audience. The technology was convincing and even made some of us that didn't believe the technology would work change our minds about the device. NBC featuring such a device surely helped the hype as millions (probably more like thousands since it's Jimmy Fallon) saw Natal in use. Does it seem that Microsoft is doing too much too early?"

Harmonix and MTV Games today announced that a three pack of songs from Paul McCartney’s new live album, a three pack of songs from Blink-182 and singles from The Psychedelic Furs and The Ramones will be added next week to the Rock Band Music Store of downloadable content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii
Capcom Vice President, Christian Svensson, answered a few questions on the Unity Boards about a potential re-release of Street Fighter 3 Third Strike and he also covered one other question that came up.
Destructoid writes: I really dislike the term "Girl Gamer" though mostly because I'm 47 and it's been a long, long time since I was called a "girl". I'm a gamer and I happen to be female. That being said, since joining the world of gaming communities, I've come to detest many of the stereotypes of female gamers.
I hate that they create a stereotype that makes it more difficult for the average female gamer to game online or join gaming communities without getting sexually harassed because apparently all girls game naked and we use controllers for bras. I hate that so many "top 10 female gamers" or "gamer girl" contests are based entirely on the quality of those slutty pictures and have little to do with their gaming skills.
But I love that things have changed and are changing. I love that being a female who games is becoming more "normal" and not an oddity, an anomaly, or a potential opportunity for hot PSN cam sex. I like that both males and females are less often stereotyped and that the gaming industry is starting to see that playing the "hot girl" marketing card isn't working as well any more. I like that the diversity that are real people and gamers is starting to show on gaming sites.

It was a great year for innovation and titles; but the coming year could be even better

Where have the vital Japanese role-playing games gone? If 2009 was a bad year for the game industry, it was even worse for the heart-sick JRPG fan. Game Developer magazine's production editorand committed JRPG scholarJeff Fleming looks back at the past year of Japanese RPG releases in North America, and finds troubling signs of a genre in decline.
Gameday: Top 10 video games of 2009
With 2009 drawing to a close, we thought it was important to put down our PS3 controller -- and stop playing Modern Warfare 2's brilliant online multi-player mode -- just long enough to reflect on the best games we played over the year.
PlayStation 3 dominates best games in 2009
For Sony and its powerful PlayStation 3, it was better late than never. While the video game console came out three years ago along with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii, this year the PS3 finally started releasing games worthy of the system's power.
Insider's Guide to Maximizing Game Trade-In Values at Gamestop and Other Retailers
Bright Hub writes: "One of the most disappointing things during my time as a store manager for the country's largest video game retailer was constantly seeing customers receive depressingly small amounts of credit for the games they traded in. I understand that the company has a right to make money, but we as consumers don't have to automatically accept whatever price the clerk behind the counter quotes us. There are ways to increase the amount you get for your games.
Now, I'm not talking about anything illegal or unscrupulous. I'm merely saying that there are perfectly acceptable ways to manipulate the system to ensure you get the highest possible value for your trade
ins. I used these methods to ensure that I always had enough credit to pick up those hot upcoming games, and in the interest of improving the lives of gamers everywhere, I'm passing on a few of my favorites."

Top 5 Video Game Wall of Shamers for 2009
How about a little "humbug" to ring in the holidays? 2009 was the usual mix of "best and worst of times," another year to celebrate games like Uncharted 2 and Torchlight and Assassin's Creed 2 ...and grouse about others like Stalin vs.
JVN.com has asked 30 French journalists from 8 different videogames magazines to chose their favorite games ever. The whole top 100 has been revealed today and #1 is The Legend of Zelda : A link to the past.
Here is the top 5 :

#2 Half-Life
#3 Resident Evil
#4 Super Mario 64
#5 Metal Gear Solid
Welcome to this week's, "Sequel, Spin Off, Start Over or Stay Dead?" Each week Diehard GameFAN is going to look at a dormant franchise that was once pretty popular, but for some reason has disappeared into the sands of time. Diehard GameFAN staffers will have four options for what they want to have happen to the series and you can see them in the title of this piece.
Today's franchise is arguably the best of the 32 bit generation. All three games released during this time were considered system sellers in regards to the Sega Saturn. The third game in the series is almost always listed as one of the best role playing games ever made and the eventual fourth game in the series won our 2003 XBOX Exclusive Game of the Year Award. It's been nearly seven years since a Panzer Dragoon game has graced a system, unless you count the Sega Ages game for the Playstation 2. Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the most expensive and sought after games on the used game market and the series is nearly universally loved by gamers and critics alike. However, since purchasing Sega, Sammy has allowed the series to go dormant for nearly a decade. Is there still life in one of Sega's biggest IP's? Eight members of the Diehard GameFAN staff discusses their thoughts on what should be done with the franchise.
A great title is a definite asset to a game, as nobody wants to be stuck with the opposite. But sometimes, in the search for that "perfect title" a loss of irony, double entendre, or common sense can result in these very unfortunate game titles. I had a lot of fun looking for these, and noticed that without trying I mostly found Sega Titles, who knew Sega was this perverted! As always, these are in no particular order.

Halo (2001)Nintendo's Goldeneye 007 was the game that took multiplayer first-person shooting on game consoles and made it mainstream. But it was Halo that truly rallied the troops. When the futuristic shooter debuted alongside the Xbox in 2001, its well-tuned controls made Halo the rallying point for a new generation of gamers. Of course, the tangle of CAT-5 cables at every Halo LAN party was also ground zero for the culture of frat-boy gamers that plague Xbox Live. You win some, you lose some.
Sony PS3 Supreme is the worlda s most expensive PS3 at $320,000
You can call him King Midas or Santa Clause, but Stuart Hughes is on a blinging spree with one more addition to his list of products that fall in the category of Most Expensive.

Creepy Schoolgirl Massage Parlour Based Off LOVE PLUS Opens In Japan
Remember the Nintendo DS dating sim, LOVE PLUS? No? The story of the Japanese man who married a LOVE PLUS game character might jump your memory.
Well, a massage parlour based on the game (also aptly named LOVE PLUS) has recently been opened in Japan. The employees are all women who dress as Japanese schoolgirls and pretend to be the game's characters while giving customers their massages.
The parlour's main website explicitely states that customers are not allowed to ask for employees to undress or perform sexual favours, though they did mention that customers are guaranteed 200% satisfaction. Seriously. They actually had to warn against that.
This game sure brings out the, uh, strangeness in people.

DualShockers: Star Wars: Trench Run Review
The point of movie based games is to hopefully recreate some of what the characters in the movie feel like during certain iconic scenes. If the game does that well, it can possibly be a success, although I'm sure we all can attest to the fact that this isn't always the case. Star Wars: Trench Run for the iPhone (or iPod Touch) manages to retain the feel of the scenes from the original Star Wars, while putting control into the average gamer's handsliterally.

Five Reasons Why Halo: Combat Evolved is the Most Important Game of the Decade
What makes the most important game of a decade? Most many units sold? Best critical rating? Most swear words per sentence/nude pixelated women? I think we can take it one step farther. How about most consoles sold?
Individual game don't sell consoles. That's a general rule that you find for game consoles, something PC gamers don't have. If you wanted to play Doom 3, you bought a brand new videocard, and that was final. But if a game comes out on the N64 and you have a PlayStation, screw it, you'll play it at a friend's house.
And then there was Halo.

IncGamers ColumnWhen Betas Go Commercial
IncGamers' Tim McDonald explains why he finds the path some public betas tread distasteful.
From the article: "I don't have a problem with the companies that genuinely need public feedback, or that genuinely use beta information. MMO betas, for instance, are pretty understandable; it's content designed for thousands of players at the same time and a lot of work needs to go into it to make sure that things are balanced, fun, and well-pacedand that they can actually support high player loads. Likewise, a few companies are doing reasonably clever things. The current Elemental beta, I'm told, pretty much strips out the graphics entirely. The idea there seems to be that users won't be distracted be graphics, be they incredibly pretty or incredibly unfinished, and that they'll focus entirely on the things that matter, like whether or not the game is actually, y'know, fun. Important, that."

Apple looking for a slice of gaming pie
Critical Gamer Writes: After some lean times, Apple really made a name for themselves with the release of the all-in-one iMac G3 computer. Its brightly coloured exterior crushed the idea that computers had to be packaged in grey plastic, and as a result they flew off the shelves. Then with the release of the iPod and iTunes they redefined how music could be packaged, and you could now carry your whole music collection around with you. Over the years the iPod has added extra functionality, with the ability to store and view photos, then the addition of viewing movies, surfing the net, and most groundbreaking of all the addition of Apps to the iTunes store. This finally gave Apple a handheld computer, that can do most things that a laptop can do but in a pocket friendly package. With the release of the iPhone they gained valuable market share in the mobile market. The iPhone and iPod Touch have proven to be major players in the gaming market, with their bite sized, and pocket friendly games proving popular with users. In fact Apple have started marketing these devices as gaming consoles, with the slogan "Next level fun".

Lens of Truth: Street Fighter Alpha 2 Retro Review
Lens of Truth writes"With the SFA series, Capcom was able to fill in the backstory for many of our favorite characters pasts' from SF2. It also gave the company the means of delivering us another set of 2D fighters unparalleled by its rivals. While the original SFA never made its way to the Super NES, a much better game somehow did â€" Street Fighter Alpha 2. Find out if this one's worth the search (or Virtual Console download) in our latest retro Review."

Although the character then says he's only kidding, he follows the remark up with: "Don't ask don't tell."

'Uncharted 2' Tops a Turbulent Year in Video Games
In this video game image released by Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., a scene is shown from "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves." The idea that video games were recession-proof turned out to be a myth this year, leading to declining sales, shuttered studios and thousands of newly unemployed developers.
IncGamers' Tim McDonald elaborates on why big businesses take the safe option while indie developers are the ones making the "next great innovations."
From the article: "Do you believe that the big companies care about innovation, or â€" and here, I don my wank hat â€" advancing the artistic possibilities of the industry? Because they don't. Not deep down. It's an easy thing to do, or to pretend to do, when you're in a strong position, and occasionally we do see surprising glimmers of brilliance."
Being a game voice-actress can be scary at times. Yesterday, Japanese VA Yurika Ochiai revealed in her blog that police recently contacted her about a number of death threats that had been made against her.
Ochiai has decided to take time off from her blog and any announcements about publicity events while she deals with the threats.
Sadly, death threats against Japanese actors and voice-actors (particularly females) seem to be becoming a more common thing in the last few years. Many VAs have reported that they have recieved threats from upset "fans" for reasons such as: portraying a character in the wrong way, portraying a character that fans don't like, dating/marrying someone fans don't approve of, appearing in games/shows fans don't approve of, and so on.

Building the Foundation of a Social Future
To say that social games are booming is an understatement. After having been in existence for only a scant few years, games on social networks like Facebook and MySpace are gaining users explosively. There are now over 200 million monthly users playing the top 10 Facebook games alone -- up by 50 million from August to September.
Investors have certainly taken notice and, even in the depths of a recession, startups have been popping up left and right. With competition comes conflict and social gaming has been no exception -- already the space is a mire of me-too clones and lawsuits, with companies so busy looking over the shoulders of their neighbors that they've lost sight of the bigger picture.
Rather than dashing headlong into this new space, throwing money, resources and litigation blithely and blindly, it may behoove us to pause for a moment and consider: just what is a social game? A little critical thought up front might open more opportunities and alleviate some of the pressure to borrow from the competition.

Films based on video games don't exactly have a good reputation. Although some of them do relatively well, their general reception is usually negative. Probably the most successful game-to-film adaptation so far is Lara Croft: Tomb Raider which, despite being number one on its opening weekend, Paramount's second-best highest opening weekend earner, and raking in over $300 million USD worldwide to date, was given a 3.9/10 average rating.
So, why does Blizzard think it can triumph where many others have failed?

It is never easy for a sequel to live up to its original, and so is the case of Star Fox Assault for the Nintendo GameCube. While the first Star Fox was a revolution in terms of 3-D games on the SNES and the remake for the Nintendo 64 solidified its presence as a strong franchise with top of the line graphics, loads of space themed dogfights and intense speed. However, Star Fox Assault just seemed to drop the ball in terms of like-ability and lasting appeal.

Chris Maginnis writes:
"Back when MMO games began to grow in popularity, MMO gamers became jealous of a single player gamers ability to pirate their games. Free private server emulation was born. Today many of the latest games, including World of Warcraft, are available on free to play private servers. But are they legal? And what is the benefit of playing on a private server?
A private server is the common name for a server emulator. Essentially, a private server emulates the functions of a normal MMO server. It allows users to login and play as they would on a normal retail server. Private servers have gained their player base by being free to play and through content customisation. At the same time, they have been criticised for poor performance and low player population. There is mixed truth on both sides."

There are a few misconceptions in the indie development community concerning the definition and legality of clone games. Some take it as given that a legal clone can be a fan game, including many of the same visual and sound elements as the original.
Others believe that because some game companies don't enforce their IP rights against fan game developers, all fan games must be legal. Some may even believe that a game is simple and general enough to not warrant IP protection. This entry is designed to dispel some of the confusion and inaccuracy surrounding clone games and fan games.

Valve In Control Of Shutoff? Developers Burned By STEAM?
Zeiram Wing writes: Waking one morning ready to enjoy a freshly purchased game via STEAM, the client notified me of an update. Reading while it downloaded, the release notes stated yet another fix for the recently released Left 4 Dead 2.
Let me clarify before continuing. This was a STEAM CLIENT update just for Left 4 Dead 2, not a game patch.
Now, there's been talk of this recently, geared more towards the developer side of things, but the recent string of Valve-game-only client updates have me pondering another side of the question:
Is STEAM "unfair"?

Is God Of War Facing Stiff Competition?
Does Sony have anything to worry about with God of War III possibly being overshadowed?
Grumpy Gurevitz Writes: Since the days of my Spectrum I have always had the chance to host, or go to someone else's to enjoy, a gaming session. This continued with my Amiga and in the years of the N64 to Playstation 2 it reached the apex of commitment with regular gaming sessions with four close friends.
We would spend an entire afternoon or evening eating junk food, generating lots of hot wind and playing a mixture of 'retro' and new titles on our consoles. The floor would be a mess of wires as we would have a PS2, Gamecube and Xbox all laid out in front of us. We would enjoy some nerdy banter, especially whenever the Xbox was taken out and switched on. The jokes mainly revolved around having to run the virus checker first and Bios before we could play a game. Other gags included us ribbing the Xbox owner that we were required to notify the national grid before we switched it on so they could arrange extra capacity.
These were good sessions.
The ending of a great game can be bittersweet. It can be a joyous event that brings all of the story together and brings a solid end to the experience. As good as these endings can be, there is one problem. It is the end.
So now what do you do? Do you move on to another game and try to hold on to the memory of the last? Or do replay the game to experience it again? Well, no matter what you do, you will no doubt be longing for the sequel. Here are 10 games (in no particular order) that need sequels… NOW!

God of War 3 demo and how it compares to Bayonetta
Thesavepoints: Hey people, it's been a long time (again), but I have a bit of time to write right now. Work and school make sure to keep me busy, but I still sneak in gaming time. So I've played some Demon's Souls, bought Uncharted 2 and beat it on hard (Single Player review coming later today or tomorrow hopefully), played some more Demon's Souls until Bayonetta came in through the mail. At that point, nothing else mattered. I've been sucked in this game every moment I could afford to play it. I'm almost done running through normal mode, so I'll be writing a review really soon before hopping on the harder difficulties.

Activision hates you. Do not feel bad, persecuted, or alone, in truth Activision hates all of us. While it seems like an outrageous claim it is also very difficult to argue against. What kind of Pirate Are You?
Given the drop off in video game sales over the past few months, one must assume that there has been at least a slight increase in software piracy. Asides from the usual piracy suspects, people struggling to find employment tend not to worry as much about morality or the ramifications on the gaming industry as these are things that do not affect their own wallet. Add to this the holidays which will surely have some burned games nestled within stockings over a fireplace, and you have a game developer's nightmare.
