A research study conducted by Microsoft earlier this year shows gamers are keen on a small Windows SideShow-powered touch-enabled and rotatable widescreen display to the tune of about 6.4-inches attached to the side of a monitor. Nometet.com: Of the last week or so there have been two teaser sites that have come to the mainstream media's attention. Those are namely the "NEXT" project from Kojima Productions and the Ubisoft Splinter Cell Conviction teaser site, but over the last few weeks there has been more movement in these marketing sites in the build up to E3. The issue is why do companies use them? I mean the drip, drip effect is a well established marketing ploy but these teaser sites that offer nothing more than a pre-rendered cut scene to show that the title is being developed seem pointless to me at least.

EA has a tough quarterbut finally praises the PC platform
BSN: "Electronic Arts announced its fourth quarter financial results, and well, they were in-line with the recession and all the doom and gloom that still is surrounding the world. However, unlike AMD, Intel, nVidia in the world of PC hardware and Activision, Blizzard, Take Two and others in the world of softwareEA didn't post an increase of sales plus losses, but rather a 24% decrease in revenues and a 7% loss.

If we look at the results, EA managed to achieve $1.65 billion in revenue and a massive $0.64 billion loss. Looking at the whole of 2008, EA achieved $3.67 billion sales and a 454 million dollar loss, while EA achieved 3.09 billion sales and a 76 million dollar profit back in 2007. Interestingly though, EA's largest competitor had almost identical revenue: Activision Blizzard had $1.64B revenue, but managed to lose just $71M.

If you wonder how large the Blizzard is, here's the kicker: in 2007, Activision had $1.35B revenue and 227M profit. After the merger with Blizzard Entertainment, revenue went to $3.03B. Thus, Blizzard is roughly a 1.7B company with around $1.65B coming from World of Warcraft [game + all the merchandise]."

The gloomy forecasts triggered an hour of selling on the Osaka Exchange where Nintendo's stock is listed â€" completing a poor run that has now seen the shares shed about half their value over the past year. Brokers at Nomura said that what was once the Japanese market's most attractive stock had now lost its allure.

Nintendo reported operating profits of $5.5 billion for the 12 months to March 31. However, full-year income was well below consensus forecasts and the company said that earnings could suffer a 12 per cent decline in the current year â€" a worse contraction than brokers had expected and a sign that Japan's most profitable company has not escaped the effects of the worldwide consumer spending slump.

Square Enix hopes to release the European version of Final Fantasy XIII "sooner than a year later than the Japanese release", producer Yoshinori Kitase has said.

Epic Games, whilst not mending Gears of War 2 and working on its downloadable content, are indeed busy with a bunch of projects. Last week, they applied for a patent for a brand new game that was titled Nano.Strike. A few more patents around Nano.Strike showcase a rather unusual faceplate patent for consoles, which curiously makes us think about the Xbox 360, which is a matter of pure speculation at the moment.

Industry observers wonder whether The9 is launching a "shanzhai," or knockoff, World of Warcraft in hopes of keeping WoW players. They point to the experience of another Chinese online company, Shanda Interactive Entertainment. When the South Korean game company Actoz Soft terminated Shanda's license for game Legend of Mir 2 in 2003, Shanda launched its own game called World of Legend.

Analyst Zhao Xufeng from Shanghai-based research firm iResearch said that the similar name and site may draw players to its new game new game. Does Every Game Need Online Multiplayer?
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "This generation of gaming has certainly seen some incredible single player only games such as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Bioshock and Mass Effect, but it's quite clear that developers don't want to deal with the criticism that they will receive from both critics and gamers for not offering a multiplayer mode in 2009 and onward. Both Bioshock 2 and Uncharted 2 are going to have a multiplayer mode and multiplayer in the next instalment of the Mass Effect series hasn't been ruled out by the developers. The original Mass Effect was quite long because it was an RPG so critics didn't bash it too much for not having a multiplayer mode, but Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Bioshock weren't as lucky. Both games offer great single player experiences but they are both relatively short games that can easily be completed in under twenty hours and that's being generous. Both games probably clock in at a little under fourteen hours. It's obvious that the developers of both games listened to the criticism that they received, but multiplayer modes aren't always necessary. If anything, hastily adding multiplayer to a game that really doesn't need it usually takes away from the game as a whole. Gamers are left with unsatisfying campaigns and decent multiplayer that they have played thousands of times over."
