Sony botch chance to get ahead of Natal
BrutalGamer.com writes:-
Man I love Sony but COME ON GUYS!

Stunning LBP Contraptions Show The Game Is Still Alive And Kicking
GOONL!NE writes: "As much as we hate to say it; LittleBigPlanet is getting on a bit. After picking up many awards in '08, it just isn't fit for purpose in the new decade, and after all, no-one plays it…right?
Wrong. So, so wrong. See, over on the EU Playstation Forums, a group of LBP fans have banded together to see who can build the best bridge-crossing machine. While most people could hardly work out how to place a switch in the Design Mode, these guys and gals have made some truly stunning contraptions, all in working order and looking pretty funky. It's pretty hard to get more epic."

Critical Gamer writes: I've always liked reading what game journos have to write. I've seen videogame journalism change over the years however, and not for the better. I still enjoy reading it, and for many reasons; to find out the latest news, to garner information about new and upcoming games, to read exclusive interviews â€" and now and again, to enter competitions or nab a free beta code of some kind.
You may have noticed that nowhere in my list of reasons for reading up on games, was mention of the writing itself. I don't want to sound old before my time (the age of thirty is stalking me, gnashing its teeth) but there's no two ways about it: the writing really was much better when I was young.

Why Natal Will Save the World (or Japan)
BNG's Tyler Treat writes, "Now, Xbox 360 fanboys, before you start your raving, I ask that you hear me out on this. Once you get to the end of the article, you can start your horn-tooting. PS3 fanboys, before you start calling Natal a glorified EyeToy, first ask yourself why anyone want to copy that crap, then note that I have a tendency to be sarcastic, then note that this is not an article designed to bash (or praise) anyone. Just hit the back button on your browser if that's why you're here. Lastly, Wii fanboys â€" who am I kidding, there's no such thing as a Wii fanboy (editor's note to self: expect sarcasm to be greatly overlooked here)."

Are we missing out on what could have been the greatest video game movie ever made?
Kombo writes: "Despite some criticisms, 2009 was awesome. While the whole year was blessed with superb titles, quarter four was especially generous. Gamers had more than enough AAA titles to keep their schedule full and their wallets empty.
So, what better way is there to celebrate the passing of a year and the dawn of a new year than our annual Best & Worst Awards? (Hint: there isn't one.)"

Some guy is selling his Steam account on eBay
Joystiq: We think this is interesting for two reasons:
1. This is actually the first post we've ever written about some guy selling his Steam account
2. We can't believe someone would actually want to get rid of their Steam account
So, yeah, eBay user dave311freak is trying to unload his massive Steam collection (139 titles strong) onto whoever's willing to fork over the most cash for it. As it stands, nobody's actually dropped a bid on the auction, so we're not sure he'll be successful in this venture.

Is the development sector leaving its veterans behind?
In the 1970s sci-fi Logan's Run humanity lives in an underground city full of sexually promiscuous party people.
At least they do until they hit 30, when they're toasted by the authorities.
Does this happen to 40-year-old developers, who don't even benefit from the Bacchanalian revelry beforehand? After all, most game developers are young, as we discussed last month.
Assuming managers aren't taking older staff out the back and shooting them, why do the years of long activity of making games involve so few individuals over 40?
Here are a few guesses...
The MicUse or Abuse?
A dispute over a stolen PlayStation 3 and other property ultimately cost Doug Abrams his life for this reason: "I'm kind of a good judge of character," Edward Stoddard, the man accused of killing Abrams in April 2008, testified Wednesday.
The MicUse or Abuse?
Back in the day where the palette multiplayer games consisted of local Crash team racing, Mario kart 64, Goldeneye, Super Smash bros and such, nobody really cared about the need for 'balance', 'level progression' and 'achievements' Games were played just for pure fun, who cared if the guns weren't balanced or if some weapons were too 'cheap' there was nothing better than running around with a RC-P90 draining out the massive clip on your buddies, humiliating them and accuse them of screen looking. But like Bob Dylan once wrote, the times they are a-changing, and oh how multiplayer has changed.

Grumpy Gurevitz: Why I fear the one box solution
Grumpy Gurevitz Writes: Recently there has been a spate of predictions that we will soon see the end of the console war, with us being presented with a platform which either supports multiple operating systems, or which is an open platform. The argument is, eventually all publishers and developers will support this as their primary development platform. The other method by which the prediction might come true is that we also might still end up using different platforms, but via a a control box which then accesses the games via the great server in the sky, otherwise known as Cloud computing.

Critical Gamer Writes: The 80's were a contentious time in America; Cold War looming, double-digit inflation and a frightening new disease. But if you were a typical western, suburban boy you were in a metauniverse, one founded in horror, science-fiction and sexploitation. The birth of many aspects of modern horror; the survival horror videogame genre, horror sexploitation, sexualized science-fiction and dirty slasher comedy were born or revived in the 80's. Atari 2600's Haunted House invented the videogame genre of horror survival in 1981. A year before Sybil Danning made the high talent Battle Beyond the Stars, playing the sexy, lascivious queen of an alien race. In 1983 Sega would turn footage of the film into part of a sci-fi shooter, laserdisc arcade game Astron Belt. Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street would define the slasher film cycle, as Sybil Danning starred in the similarly themed 1984 film They're Playing with Fire. All the while you could always rely on Count Chocula cereal and a healthy diet of similarly themed Saturday morning cartoons…and I loved every moment of it!

Artist Resume Reveals Princess Ashe In Project Fortress
Siliconera: Recently, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada stated that he was open to the idea of outsourcing the Final Fantasy franchise to western developers.
Information on Project Fortress trickled out onto the net for weeks following its initial discovery by way of artist resumés. But the extent of our knowledge of the game at the time was that it was set in Ivalice and may or may not be directly connected to Final Fantasy XII… at least until now.
After coming across the above concept art for Ashe from yet another artist resumé, it's probably safe to assume there was a stronger connection to FFXII than we initially believed. Her crown, which looks similar to the one worn by Raminas, would suggest that she's gone up the majestic ladder since her FFXII days. This probably means Fortress takes place sometime in the future.

Ars: 2009 certainly was a busy year for gaming. We've had curious console refreshes, boycotts of blockbuster games, and more peripheral-laden games than you can shake a stick at. We even got to shoot people in an airport. And what better way to celebrate the year that was 2009 than by looking at some of the more interesting things said by games industry folks. Here is your 2009, in quotes.
"We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, speaking at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco. While Kotick may not be all that popular among gamers-and quotes like this are a prime example why-it's hard to argue with his business sense. Kotick has earned $37 million in stock options since the November launch of Modern Warfare 2.

IncGamers Column: Give Treyarch a Break
IncGamers' Andy Alderson defends Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch following rumours of a Vietnam-based instalment in the series.
From the article:
"The recent rumours of a Call of Duty game set in the Vietnam War elicited a number of predictable responses from the gaming community. Obviously there were those who lamented the idea of taking the series back in time (again) but perhaps most expected was the reappearance of the Treyarch-haters. It seems that whenever the Californian developer makes the headlines, many game fans line up to kick it squarely in the junk."
GN, Gamespot and Game Trailers are considered as the three biggest gaming websites in the industry. They have millions of visitors each month and are considered the most important and reliable by many, including publishers, developers, console makers etc. But there seems to be a trend, a movement rather taking place; one that could be written under a headline dubbed "rebellion." You see, whether it's justified or not, gamers are moving away from the bigger sites and closer to the smaller ones especially when they want an unbiased game review. So here's the question: are you one of them? The reasons for this are not too hard to find.

Dead Rising 2: Capcom what are you doing?
GB writes: "Zombie gorefest Dead Rising was the sole reason I bought an Xbox 360 all those years ago but I'm sad to say I'm feeling completely underwhelmed about the sequel. I was a big fan of George Romero's classic 1978 Dawn of the Dead movie so the idea of adopting the role of a survivor holed up in a shopping mall and fending off the zombie horde appealed somewhat. Now, a few years on, I can't help but feel that where the undead are concerned, the whole concept is suffering from overkill right now."
Grumpy Gurevitz Writes: I do not have a subscription to Sky. Sky, for our international readers, is the most successful subscription based TV service in the UK. Traditionally it's distributed via satellite technology with setup boxes, but in the last year or so it has created a web offering and migrated to consoles. I really want Sky, but can never justify the cost. I'm not in enough to justify the sport and the few, high quality drama shows they have that I can get on DVD for less money. The movies and other services I can live without, especially as I now have offerings via my Xbox 360 and PS3.
However as much as I cannot justify Sky, I would really, really like it. The idea of having extra choices on what to view is a nice luxury and over the year I'm sure it would have the capacity to enrich my life in some way!
Critical Gamer Writes: A few weeks ago I was reading a very interesting round-table discussion in a well known gaming magazine, concerning the role of traditional narrative and the author in modern video games. At one point they touched upon games trying to impose a sense of permanence upon gamer decisions, and they highlighted an individual, his name escapes me, who decided to play with permanent death. Basically, if he died it was permanent game over. This got me thinking about the wider issue of games attempting to impose a sense of irreversibility onto the player, and as an extension of that, how developers utilise player led decisions in their games.
I can see the appeal of, and am slightly intrigued by, the idea of approaching a game with a sense of finality. Taking the Far Cry 2 example, it's easy to see how this would add an entirely new dimension to the game. Creeping around every corner, exercising caution where you would usually run in blindly, and spending large portions of the game running away around the nearest corner to pull bullets out of your body. Come to think of it, it doesn't sound quite as much fun as I initially thought!

Why The Resident Evil Franchise Is Dying
Remember back in the late 90's when a little game called Resident Evil was released on the Playstation? It was full of terrible voice acting, stupid sound effects and a really cheesy vibe in general, but it had great gameplay and was genuinely creepy for it's time. CC: David Yarnton, UK General Manager of Nintendo still thinks that gaming still has a long way to go before it reaches it's full potential.
Ambition and the desire to innovate is ultimately what fuels our industry, but without the hardware available to make some developer's more ambitious projects really come to life, we're often left with uncooked or technologically limited games that pale in comparison to the marvels hinted at by the design documents.
Here are five games that GamerZines think came way before their time, and ultimately, what we'd love to see a return of on current hardware.
CC: Director General of the French division of Capcom, Antoine Seux believes that 2010 will bring even more success for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but the PSP and Nintendo's DS' year will be a struggle.
You know what? Let's get something straight: The PS3's hardware is more advance than Xbox 360, that's something we all can agree on, but that does not mean the Xbox 360 is maxed out; not by a long shot. Year after year the same claim is being made, yet year in and year out developers continue to push the boundaries on the Xbox 360.
Bioware had something to say about this issue recently, the company still believes that there's still a lot of juice left in the 360, going as far as denying that the system has reached its full potential:

DualShockers writes: "The year 2000 was a memorable time for most, with the Y2K scare being a bustmakes me think of the 2012 nonsensethat meant that the future for all things would be bright, at least brighter than humanity going into a new stone age. The last 10 years brought us a handful of new consoles, a plethora of amazing games, as well as light-years worth of technological advances. I will be going over the highlights of the last 10 years, as experienced by myself, so stick with me and don't crucify me for missing anything important."

Microsoft Research patents controller-free computer input via EMG muscle sensors
Microsoft is connecting EMG sensors to arm muscles and then detecting finger gestures based on the muscle movement picked up by those sensors. It does away for the need of a pesky camera (or Power Glove) to read complicated hand gestures, and can even sense modified versions of the gestures to be performed while your hands are full. Microsoft's developing a wireless EMG sensor module that could be placed all over the body, and while like all Microsoft Research projects this seems pretty far from market, there's a small, optimistic part of us that could see some of the benefits here for controlling mobile devices. And boy do we love controlling mobile devices.

They are the life blood of the gaming industry and it just wouldn't feel right if we say goodbye to the past decade without recognizing them. If it were not for developers, gamers couldn't get to experience the memorable titles we've seen the last decade. I'm talking about the games that the media can't stop talking about. The ones gamers keep playing for years; even after ten years (Final Fantasy, God of War, Street Fighter anybody?). They get you excited, you want to take a vacation from work and play till you've completed the missions. You cry, laugh, you get scared, and sometimes your rage overwhelms causing you to throw the controller into that spanking new HD set.
GB writes: "Folks we have an exciting year ahead for Video Games. Sony undoubtedly has the best exclusives in the bag with a plethora of great games. Where does Xbox 360 fit in such a scenario? Many say that Halo: Reach is one of the biggest games that Microsoft has in 2010. Yes I would agree to that but it's not the only game that is coming out on the Xbox 360 this year."

Giant Bomb's PlayStation 3-Only Game of the Year, 2009
After years spent finding its footing, the PlayStation 3 came through with some of the best platform exclusives we played in 2009, and it just so happened that those exclusives were produced almost exclusively by Sony itself.
Teen found after meeting his 42-year-old online 'soulmate'
On Tuesday evening, 16-year-old Andrew Kane nonchalantly asked his mother and father if they would drive him from their Barrie, Ont., home to a hotel in nearby Midland, where he planned to meet a 42-year-old woman with whom he had been having a secret relationship over the Internet.
His stunned parents refused and the teen calmly returned to the computer, telling them he would let the woman know he wasn't coming. At 2 a.m., Marlene Kane heard her front door open, and found her son gone, leaving behind a troubling trail of web chats that led to Houston, Tex., and the World of Warcraft.

GB writes: "So there you have it, another decade is over. Fairly obvious this, I suppose, but the noughties (as they are affectionately, albeit irritatingly) known, have been the most significant period for gaming EVER!"
Jenifer from Explicit Gamer gives a solid case for why games have become WAY too easy in the past generation of gaming. While games as a whole are clearly (to any gamer from the 90's or earlier) getting easier, she pinpoints the top 5 trends in gaming that are responsible.

Perhaps you must be thinking of another treasure hunting adventure with Drake and fighting gangs in Grand Theft Auto V? The answer is you won't be doing be that in 2010."
GB writes: "Everyone knows to expect a new sports game every year, but what if there was a new Halo or Uncharted every year? This year at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, we saw the announcement of the new Batman Arkham Asylum, the sequel to a game that released just three months ago. There was no set date for release however, there is a large chance we could see the game in late 2010. The question I pose to you is this; do you want your favorite franchises on a yearly basis?"
