What are video games good for? Possibly improving eyesight

GDC: The Last Remnant PS3 and the Awkwardest Silence

So we were in the Last Remnant panel at GDC, where Square Enix's Hiroshi Takai and Epic's Mike Capps, among others, had just finished discussing the often difficult process of using Unreal Engine 3 to create a Japanese role-playing game.

What are video games good for? Possibly improving eyesight
People who have difficulty seeing traffic lights or cars at night, facial gestures, or when a flame is burning on a stove often suffer from poor contrast sensitivity, a condition thought to be correctable, if at all, only by eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Researchers now say they may have found a way to improve contrast sensitivity naturally, with the help of an unlikely source-video games.

RROD Aftershock To Hurt The Next Xbox?
"We as gamers know that our consoles have hardware problems from time to time, whether it was blowing out NES cartridges, turning our PSones upside down, the dreaded Disc read errors of the PS2, the YLOD with PS3's, or the Red ring of Death with the 360. However the last mentioned problem has got to be the most widespread hardware problem that has ever affected the games industry."

Will Kojima Sacrifice Quality For Multiplatform?
PSXE writes: So we all know that Hideo Kojima will reveal his new project at E3 in June, and we're anxiously anticipating the unveiling. However, it seems to be a commonly accepted theory that this new title will be made for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Historically, Kojima has always sided with Sony's brand but he has admitted that he'd like to see his studio appeal more to the Western masses, and considering that, it would make sense to include the 360 in their future plans. But as we've said before that if a developer wishes to focus entirely on the PS3, they can make better strides (just look at the current and future PS3 exclusives), we have a question: if Kojima does a multiplatform game, will it fall short of the quality we saw in MGS4? Would he even allow that to happen?

"By Friday the 13th this past week, two of the goriest games to date arrived on store shelves: MadWorld and Resident Evil 5. An omen? No, it's a bloody obvious sign that some video games are made for adults. There's a reason why the game industry has a self-regulated ratings system. Would you strap in your tween to watch Saw? Game Elements That Need to Go
Gamer Limit writes "Over the last few years, games have started to develop a few nasty traits. Like in any person, traits are generally part of the evolution of character, game elements that develop when developers try to find new ways to innovate, or in some cases, even take shortcuts. In some cases, these aspects of design can become innovation stalwarts, providing standards for the industry. But over time, they can become stale, or crutches to disguise bad design. But sometimes, they shouldn't have existed at all."

High Street retailers open the door for digital distribution
The way we are able to pick up games is changing all the time. Things are becoming increasingly easy, the introduction of digital distribution networks meaning gamers are now less inclined to leave the house when purchasing a new product than ever before.

While game downloads on consoles are currently restricted to demos and full games that take up little memory, PC gaming is taking things much further. Piracy may be the word on everyone's lips when mentioning the subject but, according to Metaboli's regional business manager Paul Howes, High Street retailers are benefiting greatly from digital downloading, signalling an inevitable downfall in physical sales.
Could OnLive be the death of hardware?
GDC 09: Just as Zeebo promises new 'fourth' console, rival service threatens to bring high-end gaming to the masses

With Zeebo proposing that the future of gaming will bring about the end of disc-based media, an arguably even more exciting prospect dubbed OnLive threatens to end the gaming hardware race altogether.

The new on-demand service claims to do for gaming what the 'cloud' concept has done to computing â€" centralise all code and assets on a remote server, with games playable by users accessing the content across a high-speed internet connection.

Most Underappreciated PS3 Exclusive
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The Playstation 3 is home to many impressive exclusives so far in the this generation. Games like the Resistance series and Metal Gear Solid 4 are games that appeal to many gamers in North America and have been given great reviews from most critics. However, there are a few other PS3 exclusives that just haven't received the attention or ratings that they deserved. After much thought, TNG has picked the most underappreciated Playstation 3 exclusive so far."

Demon's Souls is an Extremely Niche Game
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The Playstation 3 certainly has an impressive library of games but one problem it has had since launch is a very limited RPG line-up. Compared to the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 doesn't have many RPGs that appeal to the broad audience that Mass Effect or Star Ocean: The Last Hope does. Instead, the Playstation 3 has been home to a couple of exclusive niche titles such as Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles. Adding to the trend of niche titles on the PS3 is Demon's Souls by From Software. It's certainly an enjoyable game but it's doubtful that it's going to appeal to average gamers or even casual RPG fans. After playing through several hours of Demon's Souls, The Nightly Gamer has formed an opinion on the anticipated PS3 exclusive."

The Stain of PAL
Jimmy P of Gamer Limit Writes "If there's one thing that truly gets my goat as a gamer, is that the treatment of the Australian market is absolutely appalling. Ever since the creation of the PAL standard, and this countries subsequent lumping into it, we've been destined to the backwater of the western gaming economy. Not for any lack of trying though, I'll tell you."

DarkEden Infested With Hackers; JoyMax Still Wants Your Money

"While SoftOn Entertainment may have developed the game, JoyMax is currently in charge of cash-shop and premium fees, as well as maintaining the servers for the international edition. The problem, however, is that anyone who unfortunately lays down any cash for a game like DarkEden will encounter some rather unpleasant gaming experiences, especially with lag caused mostly from hackers who can move as fast as a blur."
'Killzone 2' nears perfection in its genre

Okami sold well on Wii after all?
Valay of NintendoEverything.com reports:

"This is pretty interesting. In the past, some comments made by Capcom representatives didn't exactly make it seem as though Okami was doing too well on Wii in terms of sales numbers. However, comments from Capcom Product Manager Colin Ferris indicate that the the game "definitely did well" after all.

This is what Mr. Ferris said about Okami on a recent Inner Party podcast.

'As for the Clover IPs, we did just release Okami on the Wii. And it did have some very good success on the Wii. It definitely did well. So we were excited about that. As for revisiting some of them [Clover IPs], you know, I can't rule anything out but we don't have anything planned.'"

PSXExtreme: "Many years ago, well before even I was born, color was on the verge of changing television and movies forever. According to what you will find in the history books, many artists of the time didn't take too kindly to the idea, although it sounds like a perfectly logical and appreciated step forward from our viewpoint. Obviously, there was something in the black-and-white portrayal that may have forced the creators to rely on substance rather than flash. When Orson Welles heard that a certain someone wanted to colorize Welles' classic film, "Citizen Kane," his response was, "Just keep Ted Turner and his damn Crayolas away from my movie."

Why We GameThe Pause Button
Loot Ninja writes:

"Like almost anyone else I know, I spend an unnecessary amount of time stressing over what is often the most convoluted and impractical series of, "what ifs," and, "I should haves," and whatever else rests itself on the most paranoid corners of my mind at the moment. I will worry about money, worry about life, worry about health, worry about other people, worry about…well, you get it. Faith and logic should be, and often are, enough to give me the serenity I need to kick that shit out of my mind, but when something is front and center in my series of things to be concerned over, it will often just loom somewhere in my consciousness, like a dark cloud. I will watch TV, listen to music, exercise, but it still lingers like a turd that won't flush.

There is, however, one activity that I find is the only thing that will clear my mind; that's right, video games."

Gameinformer: Seven Ideas For The Next Elder Scrolls
Gameinformer: We're pretty big fans of the Elder Scrolls series here at the office. Many of us have put insane amounts of hours into Oblivion alone, not to mention the past games like Morrowind and Daggerfall. One of the most common phrases said on the Game Informer Online office is "You know what would be cool?" We spend more than enough work hours during the week dreaming about the perfect games and what we would love to play. The Elder Scrolls definitely comes up a lot and this time we put it on paper.

Killzone 2 Almost Lives Up to the Hype
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "You don't have to have a bias towards any console in particular to understand why the original Halo is as well renown as it is. It changed the way the world perceives console first person shooters. Killzone 2 was expected to be a lot of things. Perhaps too much was expected of it, because it certainly lives up to the hype in terms of visual appeal and while the gameplay is refined, it's doesn't easily surpass other games in the genre as was expected of it."

Appleiphoneapps.com writes:

"Metal Gear Solid Touch was scheduled for its official release tomorrow, but for whatever reason the much-hyped iPhone entry of the popular series is available one day early.

The game is part of the Metal Gear Sold 4: Guns of the Patriots story arc available for the Playstation 3. If you are a fan of the series, you will notice some familiar faces. You don't, however, have to be a Solid Snake fan to play the game. It is simply an on-rails shooter with the Metal Gear name slapped on top."

Bioshock 2 Details Emerge From The Deep
The sequel takes place 10 years after the original (Not a prequel like previously rumored) You play the very first Big Daddy prototype and still patrol Rapture. The city did not crumble after all. It reached an equilibrium thanks to the Big Sister. A once Little Sister that escaped with Dr. Tenenbaum in the first Bioshock. Big Sister has returned to Rapture for unknown reasons beside maintaining order. She has captured little girls from all around the world and transformed them into Little Sister. Your role in Bioshock 2 is to either Harvest or Adopt these little sisters and solve the Big Sister mystery. You may be an all powerful Big Daddy, but Big Sister does not mess around. She will protect her city, at all costs.
The game wont just be a solo adventure game either. There will be multiplayer of some sort, without compromise to the single player.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Big Bang Mini
Big Bang Mini is yet another of those releases with which the eccentricity in the title is suggestive as to the game's content. The premise follows that of many NintendoDS Shoot-'Em-Ups; with your avatar on the Touch Screen the player shoots at targets on the Top Screen, and as difficulty progress, those coming from below and each side also. However, Big Bang Mini varies these rules with considerable affect on the gameplay. Your avatar in itself cannot shoot; instead, you directly fire from your chosen point on the Touch Screen by stroking the Stylus in the desired direction of your shot. The avatar must be moved by the player to avoid incoming enemy fire, and also the splash damage of those fired shots which miss their target, however, this too must be done via use of the Stylus on the Touch Screen.

Killzone 2 Ads Less Than Stellar
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The people in charge of advertising Killzone 2 should get on their hands and knees thanking the overly excited Killzone 2 fans of the world for doing all of the advertising for them, because the game is selling well but it's not because of stellar marketing that you would expect a game of this quality to have. It's absolutely mind boggling that a game that Sony has been hyping since 2005 hits the scene as though it was any other first person shooter. The advertisement thus far has been that of what you would expect from a Turok."

Sony Faces Heat From Game Publishers to Cut PlayStation Price
March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. is under pressure from video-game publishers to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console or risk seeing more development funds shift to Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Sony, which has resisted calls for lower prices, is likely to shave $50 to $100 off the PS3 this month or next, said Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco Partners Inc. in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Starting at $399.99, PS3 is $200 more than the lowest- priced Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp. and $150 more than the market-leading Wii.

Japan introduces the 'Ambassadors of Cute'
In order to capitalize on our love of video games and anime, Japan has appointed these three ladies (girls?) as the country's official 'Ambassadors of Cute'. Their mission is to exploit the popularity of the 'cute' culture by influencing young people and spreading Japanese culture around the world. The Foreign Ministry cited the popularity of Japan-produced video games and manga as evidence that the Japanese culture is strong worldwide -- Japan now just wants to promote it.

It's entirely possible but they must have the self control of a saint for them to not even glance at the exaggerated female figures that are prevalent in the video game world. It's a little more understandable for a man not to find anime women attractive because they often share the same art style and you either find the art style appealing or you don't. Activision's Kotick Calls For Console Price Cuts
Activision CEO Robert Kotick has made a new call for console price cuts, insisting that $299 is not a mass-market price tag. He suggests a drop in hardware prices would improve software sales -- even though he's not expecting this to happen in the short term.

"The price on platforms today has still not gotten down to mass-market price points and I think when you're in the economic circumstances that the world has found itself in, there really is a difference between a $199 game system and a $299 game system," he told Reuters.

Although Kotick was doubtful of any further large-scale consolidation in the games industry, he did echo recent comments by Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith that suggested Europe and Asia were key growth areas for the company.

SwitchGames Attempts To Offer Gamers And Publishers More Value For Used Games
A lot of gamers aren't pleased with the amount of credit GameStop issues for used-game trade-ins. Even newcomers to the multi-billion dollar business, like Amazon and Toys 'R Us, aren't offering gamers much more. SwitchGames is taking a different approach to used games. While the company doesn't offer the simplicity of a GameStop trade, it attempts to offer better value.

In many ways, SwitchGames is like a virtual swap meet. gamers can offer up their goods and trade them with other users. They can actively search for trades or passively field offers for the games they list. In the near future, gamers can buy or sell used games. Whatever the case, the users determine the value -- not the company. This offers gamers more control and if they're smart about their business, more value. Gamers can accept what they want and reject what they don't.

Disk Swapping on Xbox 360 a Problem?
Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The DVD9 is certainly starting to show its age when compared to the Blu Ray. Even the smallest Blu Ray offers roughly twice the storage space as a DVD9 and the bigger Blu Rays can offer up to ten times the storage space. It's clear that Blu Ray is superior to DVD9 in almost every way, but the question is about Blu Rays relevance in this gaming generation. As it stands right now, the DVD9 is holding up reasonably well only forcing a few multi-disk games on the Xbox 360."
