Unfortunately for gamers, Microsoft decided to make Xbox Live $50 a year for a gold membership (which is needed to play online as well as use many other premium features). Examiner writes: While attending Mini-MegaCon, I noticed a booth that disturbed me. It was one I had seen before at FX Show. It is people selling the bootleg video games. I don't know why I take it more personally than the guys selling bootleg tv series and anime. I don't even get pissed when people pirate music or games. But when it comes to the roms and emulators, in a way, it isn't even about them having those things, it is the selling of these stolen goods.
While the Xbox 360 is not listed with these vendors, it is because they know that the older console systems do not seem to be looked into as much as the "next gen" systems we have now.
Even before Sony's big unveil earlier this month at Cologne GamesCom, it felt like we already knew the PlayStation 3 Slim quite intimately.

As much as it was great fun to play the first few times, I did find it increasingly dull and a little pointless, and I know not alone in this view. If Microsoft do decide to charge once the beta period ends, then changes will need to be made so that customers are happy. The removal of advertising, which regularly interrupts gameplay, and a more entertaining interface would be a good start. Possibly the inclusion of an increased number of smaller prizes would help encourage people to continue playing as the season goes on, and make the price tag less disenchanting. There is the possibility that it the price is just for Silver members rather than all members, something that would make a lot of sense and I suspect could well be one of the many options Microsoft are considering at the moment. But, at this infant stage of 1 vs 100, I can't see any of this happening in the near future."

Shadow Tower was first shown a few weeks ago as a future Hudson Soft release for the Wii console. The game consists of a rather unique platformer where the player controls a shadow to complete the levels. However, judging from the pictures released in the official website, the level of similarities to both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are more than astounding as indicated by this Easternmind article.

It appears that there is a glitch in the free trial of the newly released "Shadow Complex" on the XBLA that allows you to play the full game without paying for it.
You will have to complete the game in one sitting, and to be honest, it is a fantastic game that is well worth the money anyway, but if you want an extended free trial, this is ideal.

Last week, we all learned how Australia is being expected to pay a ludicrous 6000 Microsoft Points for Mass Effect, as well as other titles. The inconsistent, rather insulting price points for a number of games worldwide has given us a good, clear indicator of exactly how greedy Microsoft intends to be with Games on Demand, but MS has decided to sugarcoat it and give one of the most pathetic PR responses Destructoid has seen in a long time.
"No one retailer has the lowest pricing for every product, and our program is about giving people 24 x 7 convenience and selection when shopping for Xbox 360 games," snivels Microsoft. "We're incredibly excited about what Games on Demand means for digital distribution, and will continue to evaluate and evolve the service to meet market and consumer demands."
So, Microsoft basically believes that the convenience is worth the ridiculous price tag.
Absolutely pathetic.

A timeless, but much less overwrought discussion in the realm of videogames lies around the notion of general sexual differences. Most of us have probably seen this subject literally spilling its way over bikini tops in titles such as Dead or Alive. Because of how most women are portrayed however, a lot of focus is unnecessarily placed on them and turns the whole discussion into a counter-productive practice amongst gamers. So, where exactly are our stances on this matter as a whole? Videogames are going to be around for the long haul and with time this simplistic depiction of sexuality will hopefully, wear itself out. Between men and women of various sexual orientations, most of the open ground for exploration hasn't even been scratched yet by developers. Sex is a very basic human desire and we spend most of our time trying to downplay it more than we should. Because of that, it often manifests itself in odd and/or perverse ways. Gaming is not immune to these perverse manifestations, so it's no surprise that we've ended up in such an odd state with the portrayal of sexuality in games. The question and purpose of this is to find out how we can and are meant to perceive sex in our games, in the most general sense.

IndustryGamers: In light of Activision's second quarter fiscal results, in which the publishing giant posted net revenues of more than $1 billion, we decided to take a look back at Activision's incredible rise to power. The publisher has been around for a very long time (since 1979), but it wasn't until the early '90s when Bobby Kotick took over that things really started to change.
The last 10 years in particular have been hugely impressive. Like a rodent just slowly gnawing away at the side of your house, Activision slowly made advances every year in the marketplace. They've had nothing but consecutive years of revenue growth. Before you knew it, a decade has passed and Activision nearly increased its sales tenfold. Moreover, the company now has almost $3 billion in cash at its disposal.
In 2005, the publisher finally passed the billion dollar mark for annual revenues. Today, Activision can do those sales numbers in a single quarter (as they just did). It's been an incredible rise.
On the following pages we outline Activision's sales and income growth from fiscal 1998-2008 and point to some key events.

Square Enix filed an injunction and the Seoul Central District Court ordered Fantom to cease distribution and sales of the video in April, 2007. In March of the following year, it then decided that Fantom should pay approximately $250,000 in damages to Square Enix.

We'll also examine why they failed, and why sci-fi MMOs generally fare quite poorly.

If you're a lover of sci-fi, and you find yourself endlessly hoping for a juicy sci-fi MMO to sink your teeth into, you know exactly what I mean.
